The Power of a Union Contract

The contract is the primary source of your rights on the job. It covers a broad range of rights, benefits and working conditions: salaries, workload, leaves and holidays, due process rights, reassigned time for research, and health and pension benefits. For the main PSC bargaining unit, the union negotiates the terms of the contract with representatives of the CUNY chancellor and Board of Trustees; the union’s bargaining team is composed of members of the Executive Council. PSC also has contracts with the Research Foundation for RF employees in the Central Office, the Graduate Center, NYC College of Technology, and LaGuardia Community College. As a primarily public-employee union, the PSC negotiates not just with CUNY management, but within the political arena. The contract is funded by the City and the State, and both must approve the agreements we reach with CUNY. To strengthen our hand at the bargaining table, the PSC is an active participant in statewide and citywide labor coalitions, which seek to maximize the collective power of public workers as we seek to preserve and maintain the quality of essential public services.
