Retroactive Pay Estimator

Together, as union members, we worked hard to negotiate retroactive pay for increases from April 20, 2012 through April 20, 2016 to be paid out in two payments by the end of 2016. A retroactive salary estimator has been created for members to approximate the amount of retroactive pay you can expect to receive.  Please bear in mind that the estimator is provided for information purposes and is only an approximation.

CUNY management will not calculate retroactive pay until the union has ratified the contract.

CUNY will calculate your retroactive pay on an individual basis. If you believe CUNY made an error in calculation, please contact your college payroll office to discuss the calculation.  If you still believe they have made an error after this discussion, then call the union’s contract enforcement office. 

The estimator does not take into account the percentage increase in 2017 (which is effective next year and therefore is not retroactive).  The $1000 signing bonus for those on payroll as of September 1, 2016 and May 1, 2016, pro-rated for part-timers, is in addition to any retroactive pay. 

The estimator is intended to be a tool for employees covered by the contract who have all the required information. In order to use the estimator, you will need to have your salary history for the retroactive pay period. 

If you are an annual employee, the estimator assumes you have been on payroll for an entire year.  If you are a teaching adjunct, the estimator assumes you have taught the equivalent of a 15-week semester.  There is an additional estimator for non-teaching adjuncts. 

We are not able to provide an estimator for employees in salary ranges because each individual’s situation varies.

INSTRUCTIONS

There are four estimators. Find the appropriate estimator for your title:

PLEASE NOTE: The union cannot provide individual pay data or calculate individual retroactive pay. 

RETROACTIVE PAY ESTIMATOR FOR FULL-TIME EMPLOYEES

For full-time employees, the estimator provides an approximation of your retroactive pay from the first percentage increase on April 20, 2012 through October 20, 2016.

Step 1: Consult the contractual salary schedule and locate your current salary (under column 10/20/2009, except for Lecturers whose salary column date is 3/19/2010).

Step 2: Consulting the salary schedule, determine your salary history for the years covered by retroactive pay. 

Step 3: Place the cursor in the cell (i.e., the box) indicating salary increases, type in your salary for each year in which you were employed and press “Enter.” 

Enter zero if you were not employed for that year, were employed for only part of the year, or were on leave (partial or unpaid) for part of the year. 

If at any time during the period of retroactive increases you were on the same salary step, enter that salary for each year. 

Step 4: Your estimated total retroactive pay will appear. 

Annual Employees with a Movement in Step January 1 (All annual instructions staff except some HEOs)

Example:An Associate Professor who was earning $71,073 in 2012 would input that amount for 1/1/2012.  The next year, he/she would have moved up a step to $74,133 and would then input that amount for 1/1/2013.  That Assistant Professor would continue entering the next three salary steps up to 1/1/2016.

Annual Employees with a Movement in Step July 1 (Some HEOs)

 

Example: A Higher Education Associate (HEA) who was earning $71,073 in 2012 would input that amount for 4/20/2012.  The next year, he/she would have moved up a step to $74,133 and would then input that amount for 7/1/2013.  That HEA would continue entering the next three salary steps up to 7/1/2016.

The estimator can account only for contractual salary increases and steps.  If you were promoted or reclassified mid-year, those increases will not be reflected.

RETROACTIVE PAY ESTIMATOR FOR TEACHING ADJUNCTS

For teaching adjuncts, the estimator provides an approximation of your retroactive pay from the first percentage increase on April 20, 2012 through the summer of 2016.  The estimator assumes that you have taught the whole semester.

If you have taught at multiple campuses at different pay rates in one semester, you will need to calculate the retroactive pay for each pay rate separately. 

In order to use this estimator you need to know the hourly rate at which you were paid in each of the semesters specified and the number of contact hours and, if applicable, office hours you worked.

  • Step 1: Consult the contractual salary schedule and locate your current rate (under column 10/20/2009).
  • Step 2: From the salary schedule, determine your rate history for the semesters covered by retroactive pay. 
  • Step 3: For each semester you were employed, enter your hourly rate, number of credit hours and office hour (i.e., adjunct professional hour) if applicable and press “Enter.”  If for example you taught one three-credit course, you would enter "3." Enter "0" if you were not employed for any of the semesters listed or were employed for only part of the year.
  • Step 4: Your estimated total retroactive pay will appear. 

Teaching Adjuncts

 

RETROACTIVE PAY ESTIMATOR FOR NON-TEACHING ADJUNCTS, ADJUNCT CLTS AND CETS

For non-teaching adjuncts, adjunct CLTs and CETs, the estimator provides an approximation of your retroactive pay from the first percentage increase on April 20, 2012 through October 20, 2016.   If you have worked at multiple campuses at different pay rates in one semester, you will need to estimate the retroactive pay for each pay rate separately. 

In order to use this estimator you need to know the hourly rate at which you were paid in each period specified and the number of hours you worked. Notice that the periods run from April 20 of one year to April 19 of the following year, corresponding to the timing of the salary increases.  

  • Step 1: Consult the contractual salary schedule and locate your current rate (under column 10/20/2009).
  • Step 2: From the salary schedule, determine your rate history for year covered by retroactive pay. 
  • Step 3: For each year you were employed, enter the hourly rate you received at the beginning of the time frame and press “Tab.”  Enter the number of hours worked in the entire period.  Enter zero if you were employed for only part of the year.
  • Step 4: Your estimated total retroactive pay will appear.
